Who I am

my Mission

“My focus is to Create and Educate and I can help you with your creative journey.”

Devris (Dev) Hasan has over 20 years’ experience creating and educating people about digital storytelling and content creation.

Originally from Perth, Dev spent 15 years in Sydney and newly migrated to South Australia after being based in the red centre (Alice Springs) after an 18-month, 30,000km, working road trip around Australia in 2018 and 2019.

Dev’s creative journey began when he stole his Dad’s SLR camera at age 11. Dev graduated from TAFE with diplomas in fine arts and film & television production, followed by completion of a master’s degree in Cinematography at the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS) in 2007.

Starting in Children’s television drama in Perth and Sydney in the early 2000’s, Dev has actively worked as a freelance cinematographer, filmmaker and producer in drama, documentary, corporate video and branded content production, and as a trainer and educator since that time.

Dev’s clients include leading production companies Granada, ITV Studios and Southern Star Endemol and organisations Tourism Australia, AFTRS, National Museum of Australia, National Institute of Dramatic Arts, NITV, ScreenWest, Desart, Indigenous Community Television and First Nations Media (previously IRCA).

Dev has travelled to some of the most remote and beautiful places in Australia in his capacity as a cinematographer, filmmaker and educator, and has extensive experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and individuals.

For example, since 2012, Dev has worked with AFTRS’ Indigenous Open Program, travelling to urban and remote communities across Australia to teach digital storytelling and content creation to Indigenous youth and adults on Country, including the Torres Strait, Jarlmadangah Burru, Yirrkala, Ceduna, Griffith and Newman. These have been some of Dev’s greatest experiences.

Despite COVID-19, 2020 has been an active year with Dev taking up the position of Digital Training Coordinator at InDigiMob (First Nations Media) in Alice Springs and providing digital literacy training to Aboriginal people in remote communities throughout the Northern Territory, including Alice Springs, Santa Theresa, Titjikala, Yuendumu, Arlparra, Groote Eylandt, Ngukurr and Port Augusta (SA). When travel became restricted by the pandemic, Dev designed and delivered online training to groups in Wadeye, Wingellina, Gapewiyak, Broome and Ngukurr.

Testimonials

Dev taught an inspiring combination of ‘textbook’ industry standard practices as well as how to trust and nurture your own creative intuitions. I have the utmost respect for him as a teacher, a professional and as an artist; do yourself a favour and take one of his courses!

Dev's training was excellent. Covering all aspects of Video work, the importance of sound and of course the final editing skills. Dev was patient and understanding, time management was great and at the end of the course we had all produced some work for our portfolios. The training added to my skills as a lighting engineer and videographer. I would highly recommend Dev's training programmes.
